Spotlight on Kelly Florence & Meg Hafdahl

Meet the award-winning, dynamic writing duo from Minnesota, Kelly Florence and Meg Hafdahl!

Where are you both from and where are you based?

Kelly: I’m originally from Cherry on Minnesota’s Iron Range and now live in Duluth, MN.

Meg: I grew up in Vancouver, B.C., graduated from high school in Duluth, MN, and now live in Rochester, MN.

What project are you currently working on? What are your roles in the project?

Kelly: Together, we’re the co-authors of five books in The Science of Horror book series (The Science of Monsters, The Science of Women in Horror, The Science of Stephen King, The Science of Serial Killers, and The Science of Witchcraft) and have adapted it to a television series. We are the writers, co-creators, co-hosts, and executive producers of the show and are thrilled to have amazing collaborators!

Meg: We also each have solo book projects, fiction and non-fiction, that we’re working on as well as a podcast and other screenplays.

Do you have a favorite hat under the “creator” umbrella?

Kelly: We are definitely writers at heart! But I also love directing and seeing a project come to life.

Meg: It’s been fun to adapt our books into screenplays for the television format. TV allows the audience to learn about our favorite genre in a fun, visual way!

What were your earliest inspirations? How did you get started as a creator?

Kelly: I know we both would cite Stephen King as an early inspiration! I know Meg’s debut novel, Her Dark Inheritance, has been compared to King! Hearing scary stories and watching scary movies as a kid inspired me on my path to writing.

Meg: Reading gothic authors like Shirley Jackson and watching short, creepy tales told weekly on The Twilight Zone inspired me in my own writing and career. We started writing books together in 2018 and have been developing other projects ever since!

Whose work do you admire? Who are your dream collaborators?

Kelly: We really love Nia DaCosta and the new Candyman she directed last year, Alice Lowe who wrote and directed Prevenge, and Emerald Fennel who wrote and directed Promising Young Woman.

Meg: Mike Flanagan is a huge inspiration to us in the horror genre as well as Jordan Peele. And some showrunners we admire are Mindy Kaling and Phoebe Waller Bridge.

What’s your proudest moment as an artist so far?

Kelly: We are really proud of being nominated for a Bram Stoker award for our second book, The Science of Women in Horror. We were able to write about something we’re both so passionate about and to be recognized for it in the horror community was such an amazing honor!

Meg: We dedicated that book to all the women who slayed monsters long ago and illuminated our path to make it less scary. We hope to do that by continuing to create diverse, female-driven content that will help teach and change the world!

What’s your future memoir title?

Goth Girl’s Guide to Life
